The Missing Link: What My Hair Taught Me About Business

Episode 12:

The Missing Link:

What My Hair Taught Me About Business

This week’s episode is a special one, it’s the first time I’m recording on video! If you want to see my face while I talk, head over to my YouTube channel (@LaurenMassiah) and check it out. I don’t know if this video thing will be a regular thing, but for now, we’re rolling with it.

This episode wasn’t planned at all. I had a whole calendar mapped out, but life threw me a curveball. I was challenged to say “yes” to things I’d normally say “no” to, and here we are, on video, talking about a topic I never thought I’d share: my hair journey and how it ties into business and motherhood.

Buckle up, because this episode is raw, unstructured, and totally off the cuff.

What You’ll Hear in This Episode:

  • My Hair Journey: Growing up mixed race in the DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia area), my hair was always a struggle. My mom, who isn’t Black, did her best, but she didn’t know how to handle my texture. From mayonnaise treatments to dreadlocks in college, to chemical relaxers and disastrous DIY experiments, my hair has been a lifelong challenge. It wasn’t until I discovered wigs and weaves that everything changed. That missing link opened up a whole new world for me.

  • The Concept of the Missing Link: Whether it’s hair, business, or motherhood, there’s always a piece of information or guidance that can transform your journey. For me, discovering wigs and weaves was the missing link for my hair. In business, it was learning about marketing and sales. In motherhood, it’s understanding that you can’t do it all and need to prioritize.

  • How to Find Your Missing Link: Stop beating yourself up for not knowing everything. Ask questions. Seek guidance. Pray, journal, or call in the answers from the universe. Once you identify what’s missing, you can take the next right step to get closer to your goals.
  • Postpartum Hair Freedom: Since becoming a mom, I’ve been embracing my natural hair more and letting go of the need to hide behind extensions and wigs. It’s been freeing, and I’m learning to be okay with myself in this new chapter of life.

Episode Highlights:

-"Stop looking at other people and wondering what’s wrong with you. There’s nothing wrong with you, you just haven’t gained the complete knowledge yet."

-"If you change the question to start asking for all of the information, instead of beating your head against the wall, everything changes."

-"Figure out where you want to go, ask what’s missing, and then call in the guide or the next right step to close the gap."
